Sports coaching refer to the activity of a coach in developing the abilities of a coaching. Sports coaching tend to focus on an existing problem (from which to move away) or a specific outcome that the individual wishes to achieve (move towards). In both cases, the coach aims to stimulate the coachee to uncover innate knowledge so they can achieve a sustainable result. Coaches will normally check that the specific learning can be successfully re-applied by the coachee, to deal with other problems in the future. The structure and methodologies of sports coaching are very numerous with one unifying feature, sports coaching approaches are predominantly facilitating in style, see facilitation; that is to say that the coach is mainly asking questions and challenging the coachee to learn from their own resources. The sports coaching process is underpinned by established trust in the coachee. Sports coaching is differentiated from therapeutic and counselling disciplines in that the problems and outcomes have contexts which are important in the present and with aims for the future - these do not have emotional aetiology, or baggage, from the past - in other words, the coachee has the resources they need to make reasoned progress at the time that they seek coaching.

Just like music, sports too can be a universal language. This only explains why sporting activities world over continue to be as popular as they are. It doesn’t matter where an individual hails from, the language, the sex or the religion. All of these variables have a little to do with the pleasure that can be derived from watching a good game of football, basketball, or cricket. However, behind all the excitement, behind the efforts of the players and behind the success of the game is an individual or a group of individuals known as sports coaches. This is where sports can be compared to music. Just like how in music some individuals take to managing and promoting artists, some individuals take to coaching sportspersons as opposed to playing the sport.

To achieve sports coaching success, the training will also have to adopt a game-based approach. This basically means that instead of planning drills, the drills have to be turned into games to play. When there are games with goals instead of activities that resemble drills, sports coaching success will be easier as a coach. The challenge here is to link all the games into a coherent training session that is smooth and exciting for everyone. Sports coaching success for everyone happens with competitive games as well as infusing other principle into practice.

Sports coaching success for everyone are a tall order for all coaches to achieve. The fact that everybody respond in very peculiar ways requires really thinking of strategies to make training competitive, game-based, reward driven and smooth flowing, but most of all fun. After all, everybody needs to have fun to learn. The key for a coach to have sports coaching success is to maintain the training for everyone to be as fun as possible.
